Safety
Safe operation of pipelines is a top priority for EnergySouth Midstream companies. Safety takes all of us working together – pipeline operators, contractors, landowners, and neighbors.
Be Aware of Pipeline Locations
Pipelines are generally underground and out of sight. Many major pipelines are marked, but not all. Markers indicate the general but not the exact location or the depth of the pipeline or pipelines. The pipeline Right of Way (ROW) is the land over the pipeline.
Before digging, excavating, drilling, probing, blasting, or conducting activities that could in any way affect the pipeline or pipeline ROW, please contact your state or community’s pipeline locating service.
How to Recognize Pipeline Leaks
Natural gas is colorless and odorless unless an odorant has been added. The following are signs that may indicate a leak:
- A hissing or roaring sound (caused by escaping gas)
- A patch of dead discolored vegetation in an otherwise green setting along a pipeline route
- Blowing dirt, grass or leaves near a line
- Flames originating from the ground or from valves along the pipeline route
- Continuous bubbling in wet, flooded areas or in marshlands, rivers, creeks or bayous
Pipeline Integrity Management
EnergySouth companies have developed and implemented a pipeline integrity management program to ensure pipelines operate safely and securely. By following this program, EnergySouth companies are able to perform inspection activities, assess and evaluate any pipeline integrity issues, and complete improvements and other preventative measures.
If you detect a leak, notice any damage to the pipeline or need additional information, please call 1-800-373-1444.
A contact number can also be found on our ground markers along the pipeline route.
